Summerdale Congregational Church (site, 1900)

These two single-family houses were built on the site of the Summerdale Community Church after it was sold to developers and demolished in 201x. Organized by a group who originally met in the Summerdale railway station in 1889, construction of a frame church began on this lot in 1893, and the congregation met in the basement of the building for 6 years. In 1900, the upper structure was completed. The early congregation served primarily English-speaking residents of the neighborhood, and struggled to retain membership when Summerdale was primarily an immigrant community.

The congregation survived until the 2010s, when the membership of Summerdale Community Church dwindled into the single digits. The church made the difficult decision to donate the property to a local charity that supported the homeless. Shortly thereafter, the building was razed and two large, luxury homes were built on the site.
